How to Pay your Portuguese Water Bills Online
If your Portuguese property is connected to the mains water supply, you can easily manage your bill payments from wherever you are.
Payments for your water connection are usually made to your local council; you can expect to pay a connection fee of around €15 per month for the supply of water regardless of any usage.
1. Set up a monthly direct debit
Your water bill can be paid by Direct Debit from a Portuguese Bank account or any other Euro (€) bank account with access to the SEPA system.
Receive your bill via email and the amount due for that month will be automatically debited from your account on the date stated on the bill.
2. Pay manually via online banking
Depending on your local council, it may be possible to set up a client account to view and pay your water bills online each month, however, this option is not yet widely available. Instead, you can request your water bills to be sent directly to your email and pay the amount due, providing your have a Portuguese bank account with access to online banking.
Using the payment details displayed on your water bill under, ‘PAGAMENTO POR MULTIBANCO’' , log onto your Portuguese bank account and select:
· Payments, ‘Pagamentos’,
· Services, ‘Serviços’,
· Enter the Entity, 'Entidade', Reference, 'Reférencia', and Amount, 'Valor'.
Don't forget to save a copy of your payment confirmation for your records.
If you choose to pay your bill manually, you will need to pay by the date indicated. You can find the deadline date under, ‘Data limite pagamento’ and, ‘pagável até’.
Your reference code, 'referéncia', will become invalid after this date and you will only be able to make payment by visiting your local office, usually located at the Town Hall, 'Câmara Municipal'.
If you do miss the payment deadline you should arrange payment as quickly as possible. The Município will issue a letter by post to your Portuguese address informing you that your water service will be disconnected, further failure to pay will result in disconnection.
